Trauma Informed Counselling and Psychotherapy at Harbour Therapy Clinic, Coffs Harbour.
Trauma informed counselling and psychotherapy at Harbour Therapy Clinic, Coffs Harbour, is a gentle long-term therapy that incorporates theories of early childhood attachment injuries, complex developmental trauma and PTSD (complex PTSD), and the relationship between neuroscience and impaired development. Evidence shows a clear relationship between experiencing or witnessing violence, physical and emotional neglect and maladaptive behaviours in adolescence and adulthood. These behaviours often include a variety of addictions, including substance misuse, disordered eating, gambling, self-harm and suicidality. Clients often present with one or more of these issues or because they have problems with emotional regulation especially in relationships. It is not uncommon for clients to have experienced ongoing revicitmisation across the lifespan, including domestic violence and sexual assault as adults. All forms of child abuse also can lead to long-term chronic health issues and family breakdowns.
Trauma informed therapy at Harbour Therapy Clinic is recovery focused and aims to empower clients to recognise triggers that lead to dysregulation and develop adaptive resources for managing these episodes. Event memory work does not occur until the client has developed safety and containment in the therapeutic relationship. It is only when this has occurred that the therapy shifts to the integration phase of treatment and clients begin to understand why they have been plagued by anxiety, depression, dissociation, misplaced guilt and shame. The final phase of treatment focuses on maintenance of recovery, embedding the newly acquired resources into daily living, promising a future of wellbeing and successful relationships.
