Ethical Conversations in Therapy
A Roadmap for Radical Times

The Covid- 19 Pandemic has tipped the sky upside down and left us without bearings.
How do  we navigate conversations in therapy when we are stuck in our own anxiety?

              Free Online Event- Thursday 30th September 6.30 - 7.30 p.m. AEST

Applying an ethical framework for conversations in therapy opens the possibility for clients to explore their own diverse and often challenging ideas. In the context of this therapeutic engagement, clients are supported to explore deeper thinking leading to informed choices and improved outcomes.
But how do we start such a conversation when we are stuck in our own anxiety? The Covid- 19 Pandemic has tipped the sky upside down, shifting the ground from under us and temporarily leaving us without bearings. Our clients are feeling more challenged than ever and looking for guidance to navigate the emerging landscape, in relation to health, family, work , society and personal freedom.
In this talk, Dr Simon Longstaff from The Ethics Centre will challenge us as health professionals to consider how we respond when a client presents with dilemmas that we find challenging and uncomfortable. Can we hold on to our own opinions and legitimate concerns and not shy away from hard truths, uncomfortable topics, or compromise our independence and at the same time create a respectful and empowering experience for our clients?
Join psychotherapist and director of Harbour Therapy Clinic, Rowena Bianchino in leading this lively discussion with Simon Longstaff, on how health professionals might navigate an ethical roadmap through these radical times.

Simon has been Executive Director of The Ethics Centre for 30 years, working across business, government and society. He has a PhD in philosophy from Cambridge University, is a Fellow of CPA Australia and of the Royal Society of NSW, and an Honorary Professor at ANU National Centre for Indigenous Studies. Simon was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2013.
What inspires Simon about the work that he does?
"People. I am inspired by their openness and generosity in sharing their thoughts and feelings with me. I am inspired by our common frailty in the midst of uncertainty – and the fact that this need not be overwhelming. I am inspired by the opportunity to continue learning about our brilliant, troubling, contradictory, maddeningly beautiful form of being – simultaneously the most creative and destructive creature on earth; a source of wonder and dread. If I can help people to fall ‘just the right side’ of each question, then I play a small role in making a better future." Simon Longstaff (https://ethics.org.au/why-were-here/#our-people)
