Who How & Why
"You were made to live before you die: passionately, freely and with ever growing strength and wisdom. If you don’t take the chance to do so, you will regret it when the time comes to die" Emmy van Duerzen.
In this group we will discover what was meant by the term 'Existential Givens', We will shine a light on what we think they are and how they impact on how we choose to live in our subjective world . In the coming weeks we will uncover our own strengths and inner wisdom and consider how we may live a more passionate and authentic life.
Longing and Desire.
Longing and desire for many can equate to passion and aliveness, however when misplaced " it can drain life of it's reality, obliterating new experience both good and bad" Yalom. If we are able to recognise and harness the creative and vital energy of this aspect of ourselves, in its rightful place incredible possibilities await us. This group will illuminate our many unspoken desires and reveal ways that they influence our lives.
Uncertainty and Existential Anxiety
Life is unpredictable and therefore anxiety is an unavoidable part of being human. "Curing people of their capacity for anxiety would mean curing them of life itself. The task is not to supress, disguise or deny anxiety but to understand its meaning and gain strength to live with it constructively (Emmy van Duerzen). This group will explore this universal given and its potential gift.
Authenticity v Sartre's Bad Faith.
" The only way a man can truly come into his own power is to begin seeing who he truly is. Not seeing what he thinks he should be and certainly not seeing himself as he'd like to be seen by others." Throughout life we will often stay in our comfort zone because we fear rejection. During mid life we may feel this fear more intensely which can either prevent or propel us to fully engage in the new possibilities that this time in our lives can offer.
Loneliness, Isolation & Death.
" It is one of life's most self-evident truths' that everything fades, that we fear the fading and that we must live, nonetheless in the face of the fading, in the face of the fear" (I. Yalom). This group will explore the concepts of loneliness and isolation. Through sharing these experiences with each other we may hope to enhance our ability to bear this human condition as well as aim to live our lives more fully.
"The physicality of death destroys us, the idea of death may save us" (I.Yalom).
Freedom and the unbearable lightness of being.
" The last of human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances to choose one's own way" V. Frankl. We choose to create lives with meaning and purpose in the face of potential annihilation. This uncanniness of freedom to choose must be countered by our inevitable confrontation with responsibility and acceptance of limitation. This group will explore notions of what it is to be truly free to live an authentic and meaningful life and how we may author a new way forward.
